Eating

Mike in Chicago

I now live in Winnipeg, so here is a little run down of what I’ve been liking over the past three years I’ve lived here.

The work of chefs Scott Bagshaw (Deseo), Mandel Hitzer (Deer + Almond) and Adam Donnelly (Segovia) would be of note in other great North American food cities like Seattle, NYC, Chicago, Vancouver and Toronto, which is saying a lot. Winnipegers should be counting themselves lucky to have these fellows working here (plus they are all really nice dudes).

I should also mention chef Lorna Murdoch at Fusion Grill. Her starters like the panko crusted pickerel cheeks and white truffle perogies are pure Manitoba (and frigging delicious). As well, the whole crew at Pizzeria Gusto are super dope and their Lucia pizza is insane.

Winnipeg’s other best places are usually hole-in-the-walls, and my favourites are as follows (the ones with links on them I have written about for CBC):

Sun Fortune (best duck and Cantonese)
VJ’s (best greasy burger)
Pho Hoang (best pho, obviously)
Laos Thai (the Souk Gai and their red curries are the bomb)
Baraka Pita Bakery & Mediterranean Deli (their chicken shawarma is so good)

There are many more quality spots here, so just let this serve as a glance.

As well, here is an article I wrote last year on my favourite things to eat in Winnipeg. It’s still relevant.
